My primary research interests are in Oklahoma's mass communication law and in freedom of information issues. For my book, I identified and analyzed all the state and federal statutes, federal and state judicial decisions, and state attorney general opinions shaping Oklahoma's media law. No other scholar has connected the dots between these primary sources to explain the state's mass communication law. The book is used not only as a reference by journalists, attorneys and the general public in the state but also by media law faculty at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma and East Central University. I revise the book every two years.
I have spoken on Oklahoma's FOI laws at professional conferences, am quoted frequently by the media on FOI and media law issues, and served as president of FOI Oklahoma Inc. My model letter for requesting public records is listed as a resource on the Web sites of two national freedom-of-information organizations and is frequently used by reporters and the public in Oklahoma. I began writing an open government blog for FOI Oklahoma in June 2009.
My secondary research interest in the First Amendment rights of high school and college students has resulted in refereed publications and presentations. I delivered the opening plenary session speech for the First Amendment Congress of Oklahoma by invitation for three years. I wrote three entries for the first edition of Congressional Quarterly Press' Encyclopedia of the First Amendment at the invitation of the editors.
